    The Idea of India | Bangalore

    This year, as we complete 70 years of Independence, the History for Peace annual conference, held in Calcutta from 14 to 17 August 2017, looked at India’s engagement or its lack thereof with institutionalized, collective and individual histories that make up the ‘Idea of India’. The many scholars, arts practitioners and intellectuals sharing their views on the subject included Prof Romila Thapar, Prof Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Prof Krishna Kumar, Prof Vijay Prashad, Sudhanva Deshpande and Ravish Kumar, to name just a few.

    We are pleased to carry the conversations further in Bangalore with a conference organized in association with Vidyashilp Academy.

    Conference to Classroom-Chapter 1

    We have recently concluded the highly successful third conference, The Idea of India, which was held on 14, 15, 16 and 17 August 2017.
    Engaging further with the valuable discussions, thoughts and ideas that were shared at the conference, we plan to organise a series of workshops that explore ways of incorporating these into the practice of teaching history. The first in the series ‘Conference to Classroom', was organised in association with Modern Academy of Continuing Education (MACE) and facilitated by educators from Modern High School for Girls— Ms. S. Saha, Ms. A. Sen, Ms. C. De Bakshi, Ms. S. Biswas and Ms. S. Chatterjee—based on sessions they attended at the conference.

    'The Idea of India'—An International Conference on Teaching History

    The third International Conference on Teaching History was held at the Tollygunge Club on 15, 16 and 17 August 2017, with the opening session, at ICCR Calcutta on the evening of 14 August.

    The opening session—a conversation between Romila Thapar and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak—a public event, saw an attendance of over 400 people.

    Speakers at the conference, which had participants from all over the country, included Romila Thapar, Krishna Kumar, Sudhanva Deshpande, T. Sanathanan, Hari Vasudevan, Shireen Maswood, Vijay Prashad, Jerry Pinto and many more. Discussions on what shapes our idea of India, curriculum, textbooks, art, literature and photography took place over the three days.

    Workshop on Media Literacy

    The Seagull Foundation for the Arts

    The workshop on Media Literacy was held on 28 April at The Seagull Foundation for the Arts. The workshop, facilitated by Joyeeta Dey, saw participation from educators and students.

    The workshop included discussions on how to differentiate fake news from authentic news, suggestions of ways to implement critical thinking about these issues in the classroom scenario and conversations with journalists.

    Launch of History for Peace—Islamabad

    The History for Peace project was launched at the Headstart School, Kuri Campus, Islamabad. The panelists for the talk were: Aasim Sajjad Akhtar, Salma Malik, Anam Zakaria and Safeer U. Khan. Jahandad Khan from United States Institute of Peace moderated the panel discussion.

    The panel discussion was followed by a question and answer session. Over 70 participants attended the launch.
