For me, the words ‘food and familiarity’ don’t necessarily invoke comfort, though I keep returning to it, compulsively, even when I have the rare chance to choose not to. I’d like to share this piece on Marguerite Duras, French author and film maker, who didn’t quite feel at home in French cuisine and whose cooking repertoire was impressively varied, with a bias towards Vietnamese food (she grew up there). Both Duras and another (Guadeloupian) French author, Maryse Conde, speak of their relationship with food, and the parallels they experience in the processes of cooking and writing. This particular piece also rouses questions for me on how legitimately the critical framework of cultural appropriation can be applied to cooking. Would love to know thoughts on this!
