Doing History: Cinema in the Past and the Present

This interactive lecture will engage with the manner in which cinema (especially Hindustani cinema) has responded to history in the past and in the contemporary. Using clips from different films, the talk will examine how history has been imagined, engaged with, and why history has been important for cinema over the years. The talk will focus on different moments from history to look at the issues that were important at that time. Beginning with anti-colonial investments in the nationalist struggle for independence, often articulated through songs that formed the emotional core of the vision of the films, the films responded in different ways – both as emotional commitments and as critical responses to the burning issues of the day.
