What, to you is friendship?

Are all friendly relations friendship, are friendships always nurturing and benign, is 'equality' a criterion for friendship? This week, let's take a close look at the breathless bond Ferrante paints in 𝑀𝑦 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐹𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑 — let's read Lenu and Lila's lives together.

We invite you to seize this opportunity to read 𝑀𝑦 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐹𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑 if you haven't before, to revisit it if you have, or to just join us and listen to the world of Lenu and Lila come alive. We'd love to hear your responses, and to hear you read your favourite bits from the text.

You are also free to bring in literary excerpts on and around friendship that are dear to you, whether from works of fiction or from the vast range of wonderful examples history provides us—think Marx and Engels, Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, maybe even Mrinal Sen and Satyajit Ray, to name just a few.

About the book: 'My Brilliant Friend is a rich, intense and generous hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila. Ferrante's inimitable style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship.'
